What’s So Ordinary?

When it’s hard to believe in miracles…

In the hope of change…

In overcoming…

In transformations and new beginnings…

In healing…

When our spirit is willing, but our flesh is frail…

When joy is illusive; victory, distant…

And wonder has lost its shimmer…

I am stopped by this.

light through trees

A tree just outside my door.

A reminder to ask myself… what’s so ordinary about the sun, hung in its inexplicable vastness, finding it’s rays through this tree?

That it would think to shine down to warm my face?

And what’s so ordinary about the subtle glory in each leaf… fallen beneath my feet?

two leaves

A picture of sweet surrender yet an unwavering hope of beauty…

bed of leaves

Could it be? Our lives are never ordinary or without beauty…. or without a thousand quiet miracles that transform our souls.

Perhaps there is nothing more wondrous than this… than faithful beauty all around, despite the struggles within.

Perhaps there is nothing more miraculous than knowing… even in our questions, our God is still with us.

O come O come Emmanuel into our hearts this season.

How this world needs you.

  1. Beautiful, That’s why I love December, everyone feels God’s love, people make up, they stop arguing, it’s magical, it’s divine.

    1. Thank you so much for your comment here. 🙂 There is something special about December… wish that spirit of love could be all year long.

    1. Thank you! Your words are so fitting… “why not have our faith strengthened in the ordinary miracles all around.” Did you know this is exactly what I was trying to communicate here… you did it so beautifully in just one sentence. Christ IS always with us… and it’s a matter of allowing Him in our hearts this season and always. 🙂

    1. Thank you once again. My hope is that we can find strength and happiness in the simple reminders all around that we are not alone… and God is with us.

  2. This is beautifully crafted, Kim. I’m amazed by your talent for poetry. These words are so true and inspiring–we can be beautiful, even if we are struggling within, or warring some of our own battles. There can be beauty in the ordinary. LOVE this, Kim!

    1. Marla, I don’t consider myself a poet by any stretch of the imagination. 🙂 But thank you for your encouragement. Yes! We can be beautiful even if we don’t always feel that way inside… and you said it so well. There is beauty in the ordinary… it’s almost like God is constantly reminding us of this. This world is really filled with miracles… just the fact that the sun rises everyday is amazing. I have to learn to keep this awe…. I know looking at my life this way will make me remember how beautiful it is to be given every breath. 🙂

    1. Yes Tiffany! All creation bears His glory… telling of His wonders, His might, and yet His tender love for us…. I am praying with you my friend for the eyes to SEE it daily, moment to moment…. especially when I feel least like it!

    1. Thank you, John! My hope is to remember this myself. I am learning that God is constantly revealing His glory and faithfulness. Sometimes though it’s in quieter ways than I expect. 🙂 Hope you are enjoying your Christmas…

    1. That is a vivid way to think of nature… I find that being in nature is very sobering and humbling. I am reminded of His glory and of my own smallness. I am also encouraged by His faithfulness…
